History

Like the majority of the islands throughout the Mediterranean, Meganisi has been controlled by numerous sovereign nations during its history and has always been closely linked to its larger neighbour, the island of Lefkada as well as the other Ionian islands.

Villages

There are three main villages on the island, each filled with traditional character and charm. Although all small villages, you will find virtually everything you may need during your visit - if you need help finding anything, just ask, you will find the natives extremely friendly!

Beaches

On Meganisi, you won't find mile-long sandy beaches teeming with hordes of holidaymakers. Instead, you will find that the island is blessed with several magnificent sheltered little beaches and secluded coves, where you can relax, sunbathe and enjoy a cooling swim in crystal clear waters.

Sunken Aeroplane

The existence of a sunken small engined aeroplane in the harbour of Vathy is widely known, however the full story of the events leading up to its demise remains a mystery.

Climate and weather

A long summer of almost unending sunshine and virtually no rainfall makes the Ionian Islands popular as a holiday destination. The unspoilt island of Meganisi also offers good shelter from the prevailing northerly winds, although the afternoon and early evening katabatic winds can be brisk.
